Putting more money in your pocket thanks to our Liberal Government: GST/HST Exemption on Groceries and Essentials!
November 29, 2024

In a move to support Canadian families, our Liberal government is saving you a little extra money in time for the Holidays. The GST Holiday bill introduced by our Liberal government was passed by a majority of the House of Commons late last night. This bill means that starting December 14th, 2024, and running until February 15th, 2025, GST/HST will be completely exempt on groceries and essential items across Canada!

Pierre Poilievre and every single one of his Conservative MPs along with the Bloc Québécois voted against this tax break yesterday. They voted for you to pay more for your groceries and your children’s clothing.

This temporary tax break will help Canadians save money when it matters most. From groceries to restaurant meals, children’s clothing, snacks, and even holiday gifts, almost all essential items will be tax-free for two months. It’s a bold step to make life more affordable for all Canadians, a step that your Bloc Québécois MPs, your Conservative MPs, and their leaders were not willing to take.

This initiative is a direct response to the needs of Canadian families and will ease the pressure on household budgets. By removing GST/HST on nearly all food items—including prepared meals and restaurant dining—our government is ensuring that every dollar spent stretches further during the busy holiday season. And with gifts, drinks, Christmas trees and much more included in the exemption, this move makes holiday shopping more affordable.

The tax break will benefit everyone, from young families stocking up on essentials to those looking to enjoy a holiday meal. We are prioritizing the needs of Canadians and delivering tangible benefits at the cash register.

So, whether you're picking up groceries, planning a festive dinner, or shopping for presents, this GST/HST exemption means more money in your pocket—thanks to our Liberal government's commitment to helping all Canadians.
