On Wednesday, February 19th, 2025, Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Anand announced Alto, a high-speed rail system set to revolutionize our economy and travel. The new network will shorten commute times for millions, boost productivity, create thousands of good jobs, and reduce emissions. Once operational, travel times will be reduced by 50%, allowing passengers to travel from Montreal to Toronto in just three hours. This ambitious rail system will span 1,000 km and reach speeds of up to 300 km/h, with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montreal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City.
The Toronto-Quebec City corridor is home to 18 million people, accounts for 40% of our GDP, and hosts over 700,000 students across more than 30 colleges and universities. Canadians deserve the best transportation options—ones that are fast, reliable, and safe. That’s why our Liberal government is proud to introduce this groundbreaking project. As the ninth-largest economy in the world, Canada’s new high-speed rail system will drive economic growth and showcase that no infrastructure project is too large to tackle. Indeed, it will be the largest infrastructure project in Canadian history. The high-speed rail will contribute up to $35 billion to GDP annually, create more than 51,000 good-paying jobs during construction, and unlock enhanced productivity for decades to come.
Together, let's move forward.
