Extending Fuel Tax Relief for Canadians

Our government is focused on helping families, workers and businesses. That is why we are extending temporary relief on the federal fuel excise tax to help Canadians manage higher costs amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

For families and businesses in Saint-Léonard–Saint-Michel, the cost of getting to work, transporting goods, running a business, or supporting a family can add up quickly. This extension will help provide some relief at a time when international events continue to put pressure driving fuel prices up.

The temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline, diesel and aviation fuels will remain in place until January 31, 2027. Followed by an adjustment period between February 1 to March 31, 2027, when the excise tax will be set at 50% of its regular rate.

This continues the temporary suspension introduced on April 20, 2026, which reduced the federal excise tax by 10 cents per litre on gasoline and unleaded aviation gasoline, 11 cents per litre on leaded aviation gasoline, and 4 cents per litre on diesel and aviation fuel.

Extending this relief will provide continued savings at the pump while helping businesses manage operating costs. This is particularly important for industries that rely on transportation and fuel. As global economic conditions remain uncertain, our government is taking practical action to help mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices and provide affordability support today, while strengthening Canada’s long-term economic resilience.

For Saint-Léonard–Saint-Michel and communities across Canada, we will continue taking action to make life more affordable while building a stronger, more independent Canada.
