Our government is making a historic investment to strengthen Canada's food system and help make groceries more affordable. With the launch of Canada's first-ever National Food Security Strategy, we are investing more than $3 billion over the next 10 years to support Canadian farmers, food producers, independent grocers, and consumers.
Canada is an agricultural superpower, but Canadians continue to feel the impact of rising grocery prices. This comprehensive strategy will strengthen our domestic food supply, increase competition, and build a more resilient food system that puts more Canadian-grown food on Canadian tables.
To help lower grocery costs and create more consumer choice, our government is investing $1 billion to build and expand food terminals and distribution hubs across the country. These investments will allow independent grocery stores to access competitively priced products without relying on large retail chains. We are also providing nearly $130 million to the Competition Bureau and Competition Tribunal to investigate and prevent anti-competitive practices, helping create a fairer marketplace for consumers.
The Strategy also includes significant investments to increase food production here at home. A new $1 billion Agri-food Project Finance Fund will provide financing for businesses to expand food processing capacity. In addition, a $150 million Food Security Fund will help small and medium-sized businesses modernize equipment to grow, produce, and process more food in Canada.
At the same time, a $100 million Collaborative Food Innovation Fund will support producers in developing new technologies and expanding Canada's agri-food processing sector. To ensure Canadians have access to fresh produce throughout the year, our government is investing $750 million to significantly expand year-round fruit and vegetable production through greenhouses, vertical farms, and other enclosed growing facilities.
Finally, we are cutting unnecessary red tape by modernizing regulations and accelerating approvals for seeds, fertilizers, feed, and veterinary products. These changes will help farmers and producers move food from the field to grocery store shelves quickly and efficiently.
Canada's National Food Security Strategy is a long-term investment in affordability, economic growth, and food security. By supporting Canadian producers, strengthening competition, and growing more food here at home, our government is building a stronger, more independent food system that will benefit Canadians for generations to come.
