This week, I was proud to join Mayor Dominic Perri, MNA Filomena Rotiroti, local seniors' organizations, and community members to announce a significant federal investment that will improve one of Saint-Léonard's most cherished recreational traditions.
Through Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, our government is investing $850,000 toward a project valued at more than $1 million to install permanent shade structures over bocce courts in seven parks and across 27 alleys throughout Saint-Léonard. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
Building a strong Canada starts with building strong communities. While major infrastructure projects are essential, so too are the local investments that improve everyday life, strengthen neighbourhoods, and create welcoming public spaces where people can gather and stay active.
For generations, bocce has been much more than a sport in Saint-Léonard. It is a proud community tradition that brings together families, friends, and neighbours while helping countless seniors remain active, connected, and engaged. Our local seniors' clubs play an invaluable role in making this possible. Beyond organizing activities, they foster friendships, reduce social isolation, and contribute to the physical and mental well-being of so many residents.
The new shade structures will make a meaningful difference by allowing players to enjoy the game more comfortably and safely, even during the hottest summer days. As our climate continues to change and extreme heat becomes more common, investing in infrastructure that protects the health, and well-being is more important than ever.
I am proud that our government is investing in projects that strengthen our community. This announcement is about more than new infrastructure—it is about investing in the people, organizations, and traditions that make Saint-Léonard such a vibrant and welcoming place to call home.
