Canada is facing a rapidly changing global landscape that brings uncertainty for workers, businesses, and families. In this environment, our government is focused on what we can control: strengthening Canada’s economy and making life more affordable for everyone. By opening new trade and investment opportunities abroad and building resilience at home, we are creating more good careers with higher wages while ensuring Canadians have the support they need right now.
Our plan involves moving Canada from reliance to resilience. While many long-term benefits will unfold over time, immediate measures are already helping reduce everyday costs. We cut taxes for 22 million Canadians and are accelerating homebuilding and protecting vital social programs such as the Canadian Dental Plan and the Canadian Child Benefit that families rely on.
To build on this progress, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a new set of measures to make groceries and other essentials more affordable. At the heart of this effort is the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, formerly the GST Credit. The benefit will increase by 25% for five years beginning in July 2026, along with a one-time 50% boost this year. As a result, a family of four will receive up to $1,890 this year and about $1,400 annually for the following four years. A single person will see up to $950 this year and about $700 annually going forward, providing meaningful support for over 12 million Canadians.
We are also strengthening food security by supporting producers, stabilizing supply chains, and helping food banks meet rising demand. Investments in domestic food production and a forthcoming National Food Security Strategy will ensure Canadians have access to affordable, nutritious food.
By lowering costs and expanding opportunity, Canada’s new government is building a stronger, more secure future, one where every Canadian has the chance to get ahead and thrive.
