Prime Minister Carney Strengthens Canada’s Economic Future with Visit to China

Canada’s new government is taking decisive action to move our economy from reliance to resilience by strengthening growth at home, diversifying our trade relationships, and attracting major new investment from around the world.

As part of this approach, Prime Minister Mark Carney recently traveled to the People’s Republic of China to advance strategic engagement in areas of shared interest. In a rapidly changing global landscape, Canada is charting its own course, one grounded in pragmatism, strength, and decisive leadership. This visit marks the first time a Canadian Prime Minister has travelled to China since 2017, underscoring the importance of renewed engagement.

China is the world’s second-largest economy and Canada’s second-largest trading partner. Simply put, Canada cannot double its non-U.S. exports or reach its full economic potential without expanding trade with China. Today, trade with China supports approximately 400,000 careers across Canada and generates $20 billion in annual wages for Canadian workers.

The visit builds on a series of productive high-level engagements over recent months. Collectively, these discussions reflect Canada’s commitment to renewing its relationship with China in a way that advances Canadian interests and values.

During the trip, Prime Minister Carney met with President Xi, Premier Li, and senior government and business leaders to elevate cooperation on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security. These conversations focused on unlocking new opportunities for Canadian exporters, strengthening supply chains, and attracting long-term investment that benefits communities across the country.

While differences remain, Canada recognizes that cooperation where interests align can deliver greater stability, security, and prosperity. By engaging confidently on the world stage, Canada is building a stronger, more resilient economy and creating new opportunities for Canadians to Build Canada Strong.
