In a world marked by uncertainty, our government is focusing on what it can control, strengthening the economy, protecting communities, and ensuring that every Canadian has the opportunity to thrive. Building the strongest economy in the G7 requires the full and equal participation of women and gender-diverse Canadians.
While Canada has made significant progress toward gender equality, incidents of gender-based violence and the rise in hate targeting 2SLGBTQI+ communities remind us that equality and safety must always be protected and advanced.
This week, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, announced new measures in Budget 2025 to advance equality and inclusion. The plan provides $660.5 million over five years for the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE), ensuring sustained progress toward safety and opportunity for women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people across Canada.
The key investments can be grouped into three categories:
- $382.5 million to enhance women’s economic security and leadership through initiatives such as the Women’s Economic and Leadership Opportunities Fund.
- $54.6 million to strengthen support for 2SLGBTQI+ communities, including $7.5 million for Pride Security to help offset rising security and insurance costs for Pride events.
- $223.4 million to bolster federal action against gender-based violence, particularly for Indigenous women and underserved populations.
These investments build on ongoing collaboration with provinces and territories through bilateral agreements that fund essential prevention services and direct supports for survivors.
Our government believes that investing in women and gender-diverse people is essential to building a resilient and inclusive economy. When everyone has an equal chance to succeed, Canada becomes stronger, safer, and more prosperous.
