Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially launched Build Canada Homes (BCH), a new federal agency designed to tackle Canada’s housing crisis head-on. Backed by an initial $13 billion investment, BCH will lead a national effort to double housing construction, restore affordability, and reduce homelessness.
The agency’s mission is clear: deliver more homes, faster, while ensuring affordability for all Canadians. BCH will focus on deeply affordable, community, and transitional housing, while also supporting middle-class families. By working together with provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous partners, and private developers, BCH will transform Canada’s housing sector into a global leader in productivity and sustainability.
To accelerate progress, the Canada Lands Company will be transferred under BCH, unlocking 463 hectares of federal land across 88 sites, an area roughly the size of downtown Ottawa. These lands will be put to work quickly to build homes where they are needed most.
BCH is also embracing innovative housing technologies. By prioritizing modular, factory-built, and mass timber construction, the agency will be able to cut building timelines by up to 50%, reduce costs by 20%, and lower emissions by 20%. This approach means Canadians will see homes delivered faster, more affordably, and more sustainably than ever before.
In line with its Buy Canadian policy, BCH will prioritize the use of domestic resources such as lumber, steel, aluminum, and mass timber. By doing so, the agency will not only deliver much-needed housing but also strengthen Canadian supply chains, create thousands of well-paying jobs, and maximize the use of Canadian-made materials.
With Build Canada Homes, the federal government is taking bold and decisive action to ensure more homes, greater affordability, and stronger communities across the country.
