Prime Minister Carney launches new Major Projects Office to fast-track nation-building projects

In an era defined by rapid global change, Canada is taking decisive action to build a stronger, more competitive economy. Central to this effort is the newly passed Building Canada Act, enacted by Parliament in June 2025. This landmark legislation aims to streamline federal approval processes, enabling faster construction of key nation-building projects such as ports, railways, energy corridors, critical mineral developments, and clean energy initiatives.

The government launched last week the Major Projects Office (MPO), headquartered in Calgary with offices opening soon across Canada, tasked with expediting the approval and financing of major infrastructure projects. The MPO will serve as a single point of contact, reducing the timeline for regulatory approvals to a maximum of two years by implementing a “one project, one review” approach in partnership with provinces and territories.

This streamlined process is expected to unlock investments that have long been stalled by complex and slow regulatory systems. In addition to accelerating approvals, the MPO will coordinate financing involving private sector investors, provincial and territorial governments, and federal initiatives such as the Canada Infrastructure Bank and Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program. These efforts aim to create jobs, diversify Canada’s economy, and foster long-term prosperity.

The MPO will benefit from the expert advice of an Indigenous Advisory Council. As legislated in the Building Canada Act, partnership and consultation with Indigenous Peoples is central to the work of the MPO and the government’s broader mission to build major infrastructure faster.

By moving swiftly to build essential infrastructure, Canada is positioning itself to become a global leader in sustainable economic growth, while protecting the environment and respecting Indigenous rights. The government plans to announce its first set of nation-building projects soon, signaling a new era of Canadian innovation and prosperity in the coming weeks.
