Canada Strengthens Defence with Historic Investments
June 13, 2025

In response to an increasingly dangerous and divided global landscape, Canada is stepping up to defend its people, values, and sovereignty while supporting its Allies. Our Liberal government recognizes the urgent need to modernize and enhance the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to meet today’s security challenges and to help shape a more stable and prosperous world.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this week a bold plan to rebuild, rearm, and reinvest in the CAF, marking a major step forward in Canada’s defence strategy. This year, Canada will meet NATO’s 2% defence spending target five years ahead of schedule with an investment exceeding $9 billion for 2025-26. The government will also accelerate funding in the coming years, reflecting the nation’s evolving security imperatives.

Key measures in the plan include improving pay and recruitment for CAF personnel, boosting operational readiness, and investing in fleet maintenance and infrastructure. Canada will acquire new aircraft, armed vehicles, ammunition, and boost projects already underway. The plan also focuses on developing cutting-edge technologies such as drones and sensors for Arctic and seafloor monitoring, alongside repairs and upgrades to existing ships and aircraft.

The Canadian Coast Guard will also see expanded capabilities and integration into NATO defence efforts, enhancing maritime surveillance and protecting our sovereignty. Additionally, the government aims to bolster Canada’s defence industrial base and build capacity in artificial intelligence, cyber security, quantum technology supported by modern, secure digital infrastructure.

Prime Minister Carney has been clear that Canada will seize this opportunity with urgency and determination to assert its sovereignty and meet our NATO defence commitments. This historic investment will not only strengthen our national security but will also fuel innovation and job creation, ensuring a more prosperous and secure future for all Canadians.
