On February 15, we mark the 60th anniversary of the Canadian flag – a powerful symbol of our resilience, unity, and shared values. Since its adoption in 1965, the flag has stood for generosity, openness, respect, and equality, uniting Canadians from coast to coast to coast. This iconic red-and-white flag with its maple leaf connects us to our national identity, our Canadian pride, and to one another. It is a constant reminder of our beautiful home.
In recent weeks, public displays of national pride have grown, making this milestone even more significant. Now, more than ever, it is important that we stand together to celebrate our identity and our shared sense of belonging. Let us come together to honour our flag and remind ourselves of the spirit of community that defines us as Canadians – looking after our neighbours and being there for each other.
Under the theme "Celebrate Our Love for the Canadian Flag," celebrations to mark this anniversary will begin on Valentine’s Day, February 14. Here’s how you can take part:
- Raise your flag wherever you are to mark this special day.
- Show your pride and share your photos on social media using #CanadianFlag and @CdnHeritage.
- Choose Canada by cheering on Team Canada during the 4 Nations Face-Off hockey game on February 15 at the Bell Centre in Montréal or join the excitement from home, with friends and family.
- Look out for illuminations near you, as iconic sites across Canada will be lit up in our flag’s colours on the evenings of February 15 and 16.
- Visit the Canadian Heritage website to learn more about the flag and its history, and discover fun activities for the whole family.
Canada – the best country in the world, forever strong and free!
