Strengthening Canada’s Borders!
January 10, 2025

Canada is taking bold steps to tackle the illegal drug trade and organized crime with a $1.3 billion dollar investment in border security and law enforcement. The comprehensive Border Plan, announced in late December by my colleague, Minister LeBlanc alongside Ministers Miller, and Saks, enhances the ability of law enforcement to detect and disrupt the flow of illegal drugs, strengthen border security, and improve operational coordination.

Key Initiatives:

  1. Advanced Detection Tools: AI and imaging technologies will support law enforcement in intercepting fentanyl and its precursor chemicals. Health Canada will also create a new Drug Profiling Centre and a Chemical Precursor Risk Management Unit.
  2. New Law Enforcement Resources: A new Aerial Intelligence Task Force, including helicopters, drones, and surveillance towers, will provide 24/7 border surveillance. The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) will also deploy even more trained canine teams to detect illegal drugs.
  3. Improved Border Efficiency: The plan will reduce unnecessary border waits and streamline immigration processes by strengthening the ability to suspend visas when needed.
  4. Enhanced Coordination: Three regional hubs will bring together Federal, Provincial, and local law enforcement to better target organized crime and drug trafficking.

This enforcement-focused approach gives front-line officers the tools they need to protect communities in Canada. By making these strategic investments, our Government is ensuring that the border remains strong, secure, and better equipped to handle the challenges of today and the future.
