The National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft: Real Progress and Positive Results
November 8, 2024

Canada’s efforts to combat auto theft are making significant strides thanks to the National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft. The plan focuses on the root causes and is taking steps to dismantle national and international organized crime groups behind vehicle theft in Canada. The plan has already begun yielding promising results.

In 2024, national auto theft rates dropped by 19% in the first half of the year compared to 2023, a clear sign that we are seeing the fruits of these initiatives. We have recorded the most significant decrease right here at home, with vehicle theft down 41% in Quebec during the first half of 2024!

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has intercepted over 1,900 stolen vehicles so far—surpassing last year’s total with months still to go. This April alone, the CBSA, working jointly with Quebec police services recovered nearly 600 stolen vehicles from the Port of Montreal.

The Action Plan has led us to implement key strategies which have yielded significant milestones:

  1. New Criminal Code amendments: Law enforcement now has enhanced tools to tackle auto theft, including measures targeting the use of violence and organized crime in vehicle thefts and new offences related to the possession/distribution of electronic tools used to commit auto theft.
  2. Increased intelligence sharing: Coordinated efforts between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), CBSA, Sûreté du Québec and international law enforcement agencies have improved the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles. Additionally, new partnerships with the automotive, insurance, and shipping industries have strengthened efforts to detect and deter auto theft.
  3. Advanced technology deployment: Increased scanning of shipping containers to specialized anti-theft training for officers, our Liberal government is leveraging the modern tools available to us to prevent auto theft.

While the involvement of international criminal groups in vehicle theft remains a concern, these combined efforts are proving to be a decisive force in the fight against auto theft in Canada. With continued collaboration and innovation, the future looks promising for reducing this crime even further.

Our Liberal government remains committed to its collaborative approach and is focused on keeping Canadians safe and secure.
