Mental Illness Awareness Week: A Brighter Future for Young Canadians
October 11, 2024

This week is Mental Illness Awareness Week and the perfect opportunity to support some of the wonderful community hubs in Saint-Leonard-Saint-Michel who support our youth and their mental health through community building. The Maison des jeunes de Saint-Léonard, the B.A.D.R Saint-Léonard, the Centre socioéducatif Lasallien et the Centre éducatif communautaire René-Goupil are all pillars of this community that empower our youth and support their development!

Improved access to mental health support for youth is one of our liberal government’s focuses which is why we recently established the Youth Mental Health Fund, and today is the perfect day to highlight this milestone investment.

The pressures facing Gen Z—from a challenging job market and expensive housing to the rising cost of living—are contributing to never-before-seen levels of anxiety and mental health challenges. As many young Canadians are still in school or just starting their careers, accessing private mental health care is often difficult to access due to the costs. This generation is confronting issues beyond their control, and it’s more important than ever that they receive the support they need to take care of their mental health effectively.

The $500 million Youth Mental Health Fund will allow community health organizations to expand their services and enhance their ability to refer young people to specialized mental health care. The goal is to ensure that mental health care is not just accessible, but also effective and timely, helping youth overcome the unique challenges they face today. As our liberal government continues to strengthen mental health services, additional investments like the $7.5 million over three years for Kids Help Phone will further support kids across the country.

This investment in youth mental health is not only about improving lives—it’s about creating a future where every Canadian has the chance to reach their full potential. Mental health is as important as physical health, and it’s essential that our healthcare system reflects this!
