A new community centre in Saint-Michel !
July 3, 2024

Good infrastructure is the heart of healthy and prosperous communities.

Infrastructure and housing go hand in hand. When we build community infrastructure near affordable housing, we create connected communities that learn and grow together.

Facilities that meet the social, cultural and health needs of communities are essential to fostering resilience. These buildings are necessary to the well-being of all Canadians.

By linking infrastructure investments to concrete solutions to increase Canada's housing supply, we can build the kind of places where people can live and flourish.

That’s why our government had made investing in new infrastructure a priority – so that our communities can have the spaces they need to meet, connect, and thrive.

This morning I was proud to announce, alongside our Prime Minister @Justin Trudeau, $11,6M from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program which will be used to build a brand-new community centre right here in Saint-Michel.

The Maison communautaire de Saint-Michel is a construction project led by the non-profit Saint-Michel, quartier de l'innovation sociale (SMQIS) and will open its doors in February 2026.

The building will support the activities of 7 community organizations, and its primary effect will be to offer joint services to the population. By pooling these services, it will help sure the sustainability and security of these organizations, and to multiply the impact and the quality of their services for the population of Saint-Michel. It will bring together services for all ages, creating an intergenerational and intercultural space that will promote social inclusion by combating systemic injustice.

Built over three floors, the new energy-efficient building will include a collective kitchen and a multifunctional space where the Saint-Michel community will be able to gather.

This new sustainable space will make a real difference for our community and foster solidarity, unity, and inclusion!
