Unveiling the National Suicide Prevention Action Plan
June 7, 2024

In a significant effort to enhance mental health support, the Honourable Ya’ara Saks, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, announced the release of the first National Suicide Prevention Action Plan. This strategy aims to address the ongoing public health challenge of suicide, affecting individuals of all ages and backgrounds across Canada.

The Action Plan builds on the existing Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention and the successful launch of the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline. This comprehensive approach leverages current evidence to strengthen suicide prevention and life promotion efforts nationwide.

This announcement comes six months after the launch of the 9-8-8 helpline. This three-digit number offers 24/7 crisis support in English and French across Canada. Trained responders provide trauma-informed and culturally appropriate assistance without judgment during times of crisis.

The National Suicide Prevention Action Plan reflects our government’s commitment to improving mental health services and preventing suicide. This collaborative and evidence-based strategy aims to reduce suicide rates and support the wellbeing of all Canadians.

If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 for support in English or French, available 24/7. Together, we are working to support communities across Canada.
