C-252 adopted at second reading in the Senate !
May 31, 2024

I am thrilled to share that my Private Member’s Bill, C-252 – The Child Health Protection Act, has successfully passed its second reading in the Senate. This significant milestone brings us closer to implementing essential measures that will help safeguard the health and nutrition of our children.

Bill C-252 aims to level the playing field by prohibiting the marketing of foods and beverages that exceed certain thresholds of sugar, saturated fats, or sodium directly to children under the age of 13. My objective is clear: to ensure a healthier future for kids by mitigating the exposure to advertisements of foods that can contribute to an unhealthy diet.

With the Bill passing its second reading, it will now be examined by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. This Committee plays a crucial role in reviewing the details of the Bill, ensuring that all aspects are meticulously evaluated. Their study will involve consultations with experts, stakeholders, and various interest groups.

Bill C-252 highlights our collective commitment to fostering a healthier environment for our children. By curbing the marketing of foods that can contribute to an unhealthy diet, we are taking a significant step toward addressing the rising concerns of childhood obesity and related health issues. It is a measure that is long overdue, and its implementation will reflect our dedication to promoting healthier lifestyle choices for our youth.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my colleagues, stakeholders, and all those who have supported this Bill thus far, with a special thanks to Senator Donna Dasko who is sponsoring the bill in the Senate. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our children, ensuring that they have the best possible start in life.

I look forward to continuing to work to ensure that Bill C-252 receives royal assent and becomes law.
