Sport plays a key role in supporting communities, stimulating the economy and contributing to the well-being of Canadians and the country. However, without sufficient safeguards and accountability, sport can also be harmful.
That’s why our government is committed to putting into place a safer, more inclusive, and more welcoming sport system so that all Canadians can have a positive experience while reaping the benefits in our communities.
This will be accomplished by, among other things, the Future of Sport in Canada Commission. Today, we announced the appointment of Justice Lise Maisonneuve as Commissioner and Noni Classen and Dr. Andrew Pipe as Special Advisors.
For 18 months, the Commission will conduct a thorough examination of the Canadian sport system to help find solutions against traumatic experience and better protect human rights.
The commission will conduct exhaustive consultations with a broad array of stakeholders, including survivors and victims of mistreatment in sport, to bring to light lived experiences, support healing and engage on how to improve the sport system in Canada. They will also:
- report on concrete and effective action that can be taken to improve safe sport and improve the sport system in Canada;
- produce two reports; and
- hold a National Summit for participants to deliberate preliminary findings and recommendations.
All Canadians are encouraged to participate in the Commission’s public process. To learn more about the commission and its work, consult this page: https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/future-sport.html
