Fighting Against Car Theft in Canada
February 9, 2024

On February 8th, our government met with law enforcement and industry leaders to combat the theft of 90,000 cars each year in Canada. With organized crime on the rise, the National Summit on Combatting Auto Theft hosted discussions centering proactive measures to safeguard communities and hold perpetrators accountable.

We are taking immediate action on this issue. Our government has announced the allocation of $28 million to enhance the Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) capabilities in investigating and sharing intelligence on stolen vehicles. Additionally, strategies to prohibit devices like the Flipper Zero, used for remote keyless entry theft, are being explored through collaboration with law enforcement. These initiatives complement the recent federal investments of $121 million to address gun and gang violence, including efforts to combat organized crime and auto theft.

Our work does not stop there. The ongoing efforts encompass improving information sharing between local and railway police to intercept stolen vehicles, strengthening collaboration among Public Safety Canada, the CBSA, RCMP, and international partners, and modernizing the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to incorporate theft deterrence technology.

With plans to finalize an action agenda in the coming months, we remain committed to protecting citizens and communities from the impacts of auto theft.
