Dear fellow constituents of Saint-Léonard-Saint-Michel,

I know for many of us that this past year has had its share of challenges. Together we have faced inflation, increases in the cost of living and the lingering aftermath of a global pandemic. Despite these uncertain times our government will continue to ensure that the needs of all Canadians are met and that each and everyone of us has the support we need to succeed.

That is why, with the New Year fast approaching, our government is looking to the future with optimism and determination. Our 2023 Fall Economic Statement was an opportunity to reaffirm our profound commitment to help Canadians face the economic challenges that the world is currently experiencing. We put forward an ambitious but realistic and responsible economic update, one that offers every Canadian the support that they need while ensuring that we maintain the lowest debt ratio of all G7 countries. Over one million more Canadians are employed today than before the pandemic, and inflation has fallen from its peak of 8.1% in June 2022 to 3.1% today.

Still, many Canadians are feeling financial pressure, particularly when it comes to housing. In response, the 2023 Fall Economic Statement is focused on two key challenges.

First, the government is continuing to support Canadians at a time when some prices are still too high and mortgage renewals are looming. We announced the new Canadian Mortgage Charter, which details the relief that Canadians can expect from their banks if they are in financial difficulty.

Second, the government is accelerating its work to build more homes, faster, and make housing more affordable. Building on the historic action the government has already taken, the 2023 Fall Economic Statement introduces 20 billion dollars in new low-cost financing to build apartment buildings and takes steps to crack down on short-term rentals such as AirBnB so that homes can be used for Canadians to live in.

It is important to recognize the challenging times that many in our communities are facing. Beyond economic uncertainty we have all witnessed with sadness and concern the conflicts around the globe. Moreso than ever that reality reminds us all how fortunate we are to live in Canada in peace. So let us take advantage of this holiday period to spend quality time with the people who are most important in our lives, our families and loved ones.

I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday period, and a New Year 2024 filled with health, joy, and success.
