In a historic move towards improving overall health, our government has introduced the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Acknowledging the pivotal role oral health plays in our well-being, the CDCP aims to break down financial barriers, providing access to oral health care for up to nine million uninsured Canadians earning less than $90,000 annually.
Rolling out in phases, the CDCP will initially focus on seniors, with applications opening for those aged 87 and above in December 2023. The applications will expand in to those aged 77 to 86 in January 2024, followed by those aged 72 to 76 in February 2024, then those aged 70 to 71 in March 2024.
Utilizing a phased approach ensures a smooth onboarding process, with online applications becoming available from May 2024 for eligible Canadians 65 and older. Persons with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate and children under the age of 18 will be able to apply online starting June 2024. All remaining eligible Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 will be able to apply online starting in 2025.
The CDCP offers comprehensive coverage, including preventive measures such as cleaning, examinations, x-rays, fillings, removable dentures, and root canal treatments. Regular reviews based on data and evidence will guide continuous improvement, ensuring the plan remains responsive to evolving health needs.
Recognizing the vital role of oral health professionals, this initiative aligns with the Government of Canada's commitment to making life more affordable, addressing a crucial aspect of citizens' overall health and well-being.
