Canada Housing Benefit

The Canadian government recently introduced the Canada Housing Benefit. This assistance is intended to help Canadians who need it the most to help them pay their rent by offering them a $500 allowance.

Here are the criteria to be met in order to be eligible for this aid*:

  • Be 15 years old on December 1, 2022
  • Live in Canada and pay taxes there
  • Have an adjusted net income for the year 2021
    • $35,000 or less in the case of families (including people who are married and living common-law);
    • $20,000 or less for a person living alone;
  • Having paid rent:
    • In 2022 for your main accommodation
    • That this rent was equal to 30% or more of the readjusted family net income mentioned above
      • For example, a family that had an adjusted net family income of $35,000 in 2021 must have paid at least $10,500 in rent for the year 2022 (i.e. a monthly rent of $875 per month)

The application portal will remain open until March 31, 2023.
